The Role of Nurse Practitioners
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are highly trained, master prepared nurses who play a vital role in Saskatchewan’s health care system. They are licensed to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of health conditions across all stages of life. Working independently or as part of a collaborative health care team, NPs provide comprehensive, patient-centered care in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, long-term care homes, and rural or remote communities.
Their broad scope of practice helps reduce wait times and supports the sustainability of the health system, especially in communities where access to physicians may be limited. NPs are key contributors to team-based care, often working alongside physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, and other health professionals to ensure patients receive timely and effective care.
Understanding the Health Canada Act Changes
What Does the Health Canada Act Update Mean for Me?
On January 10, 2025, Health Minister Mark Holland announced an update to the Canada Health Act, confirming that medically necessary services provided by nurse practitioners will be covered under provincial and territorial health plans, similar to those provided by physicians. This means that medically necessary services delivered by nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and midwives will be included, ensuring patients are not charged out-of-pocket fees for these services. It’s important to note that the announced changes do not take effect until 2026. However, if you are empaneled with our clinic, you will be eligible for coverage once the new policy is implemented.
Will I Be Covered Under the New Act?
If you are a patient registered with our clinic, you will be covered when the new provisions come into effect in 2026. Until then, regular fees apply, and it’s essential to stay informed about your current coverage status.
How Can I Ensure I'm Eligible for Coverage?
If you are empaneled under our clinic, you will be covered when the new funding takes effect. Being empaneled means you have an established relationship with our team as your primary care provider. This ensures that when coverage begins, you are already in the system and eligible for funded care.
If you have any questions or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you and keep you informed as healthcare coverage evolves.
What Should I Do If I Have More Questions?
If you have further questions or need clarification, please reach out to our team. We are committed to providing you with the information and support you need to understand these changes fully.
How Does This Affect My Current Healthcare Plan?
Your current healthcare plan remains unchanged until the new act provisions are implemented. We recommend reviewing your plan details and discussing any concerns with our healthcare professionals.
